“In the context of the song the name [Takaya] becomes a state of mind, a chakra, an era, ....the repetition takes it from a word with meaning... to a wordless wailing of the wind, whose meaning comes from a different place. The singer speaks of a public struggle that can also be seen as a personal, internal journey. ...the striking vocal ...has a compelling edge... and a sense of a barely suppressed wail let loose. The instrumentation is full of subtle echoes of the words, but it never gets too clever, it never gets in the way of the steady pulse of the song – a pulse which conveys a sense of urgency and threat. There is a thrilling sense of malice...coming from everywhere and nowhere, outwards and inwards. The singer does not take a position of moral correctness, but suggests that she herself, on some level she does not entirely understand, is both in danger and part of the danger as well. Congratulations on a song which, given its topic, could have been a rather one-dimensional bit of songwriting journalism, but instead puts the listener in touch with something mysterious”

- Stephen Hatfield, Legendary Canadian Choral Director.

“I’m really impressed with this album and am delighted it’s found a home on our Canadian and US Folk channels as well as our US Americana channel.”

- Greg Torrington, Stingray Group Inc.

Check out this article which explores the creative seeds that were planted when we each read a beautiful Chinese children's story, Mr Cat and the Little Girl (Clavis Publishing). Our song, Flowers Grow, is also being translated into Chinese, standby for more info on that!

Chinese Books for Young Readers

“Heather Read and Jonny Miller, the lifeblood of Peach and Quiet, root out Americana and beautiful folk sounds, and deliver on every front. Aesthetically, the album cover for Just Beyond the Shine is exquisite and sublime, and listening in to the opening track Empty to Fill absorbs and draws your conscience wide, floating over notes and sadness. This is a track full of doubt and certainty, realizations and hypocrisies. A smooth and lush reminiscence, a power solo injected from love and memory. A cerebral musical bruise to heal over.”

- Nice Mind Records

“Mixing folk delicacy with country moves and Americana vibes, not to mention poetic lyricism and gorgeously intertwined harmonies, the debut album from Canadian West Coasters, Peach & Quiet is a class act. Every lyric, every note, every beat is exactly where it needs to be and exactly what is required…there are plenty of artists, even within the roots music world, who could learn a thing or two from Peach & Quiet.”

— Dave Franklin, Dancing About Architecture

“Heather Read and Jonny Miller are both gifted singer-songwriters in their own right, but this album clearly shows that as a duo they’re more than the sum of their parts. As first impressions go, I'm very impressed with Peach & Quiet.”

Slim Chance

“Taking the listener back to simpler and more innocent times, the songs…focus on the power of loving relationships, and the musical arrangements sit comfortably with this theme. An excellent debut, offering a varied selection of songs united by those great harmony vocals and fine production.”

David Jarman, Americana UK

“There’s always something original, individual and superb about Canadian roots music. So much of it comes from over there. On this evidence, Peach And Quiet belong in the top draw. Everything on Just Beyond The Shine is tasty, juicy and definitely needs shouting about.”

Andy Thorley, Maximum Volume Music

Just Beyond the Shine puts a marker down that 2021 could be one those years that hits new heights. Outside the realms of hyperbole, Peach & Quiet has made a record that is easy to admire and ripe for enjoyment. Fundamentals maybe, but when in place the potential for a record to grow is boundless.”

Three Chords and the Truth

“Peach and Quiet create a certain warmth with their songs, each one treated to inviting arrangements and gentle harmonies. Their hopes for a brighter future shines through in these songs, embedded in their desire for social change and a better world.”

Allan Wilkenson, Northern Sky

“This Canadian duo’s auspicious debut is the kind of record that wraps itself warmly inside your ears—albeit with moments of sheer honesty that will give you the chills. A sound that’s at once retro and totally contemporary with plenty of hooks and a flair for songwriting, the music and vocals remind me of the glory days of Laurel Canyon. Rooted in folk-rock, these nine fresh selections expand the template with touches of soft rock, indie rock, and intermittently nodding toward country-rock. Regardless of the sound path chosen from song to song, it is always like an oasis of peaceful ease and good vibes amid the uncomfortable, mad scenes found in the outside world we currently live in. Restrained and delicate, nursing you back to equilibrium with its sumptuous balm of laid back-growers, Just Beyond the Shine is a near perfect hangover record.”

Alan Cackett

“This collection of woke and environmentally aware songs will warm the cockles of your heart…brings to mind Laurel Canyon in its heyday.”

Muff Fitzgerald, Rock ‘N Reel

“A flawless production…flawlessly arranged and played by pedigree musicians. This is a very nice introduction to a duo that embraces life and knows how to give it a beautiful shape.”

Dani Heyvaert, Rootstime

“An engagingly warm and melodic collection of rootsy pop that showcases both their harmonies and 60s influences…a kind of hush for those of a 60s folk pop persuasion, it'll be a plum acquisition.”

Mike Davies, Fatea Records

Classically designed songwriter ballads … ‘Just Beyond The Shine’ sounds like they have been playing together for 30 years.”

Ullrich Maurer, Gaesteliste

“Together Miller and Read sound like more or less no one else other than themselves; it's beautifully crafted and quite distinctive; and that guitar picking will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. The whole album has been both a delight and a basket of surprises from start to finish.”

The Rocking Magpie

“Straight out of 1970s Laurel Canyon…the songwriting is superb throughout. There’s absolutely nothing out of place on this album. [The] combination of superbly-crafted songs and subtle Laurel Canyon-era arrangements is the perfect antidote to winter on either side of the Atlantic.

Allan McKay, Music Riot

“They immediately show their experience and songwriting prowess; this is no straight off the boat duo…this is an album that is going to be one for relaxing to. The warm, gentle sound just makes you feel comfortable. Add to that, they are good musicians and there’s such a lovely guitar tone.”

Blues Blues

"It is in the new release from the British Columbia duo of Peach & Quiet, the superbly produced Just Beyond The Shine, that the gentleness and deep thoughts abound...an album of delight, made real by experience, and one that does not waver from its conviction. A rare commodity in a time of fluctuation opinion and stance."

Ian D. Hall, Liverpool Sound and Vision

“Songs about the up and downside of love.....the most striking aspect being their exquisite vocal harmonies"

Michael Hingston, Country Music People

“Partners in music and in life, Heather Read & Jonny Miller deliver folk music, tinged with rock and country, with a modern and traditional faith…it's hard to believe that Heather and Jonny only met in 2019, so much is the musical harmony of the couple.”

— Le Cri Du Coyote (France)

“This duo of musicians and lovers, presents their incredible single “Empty to Fill”, transmitting love in their lyrics. This Canadian duo sends the message that love is all we have in these bad times of pandemic and social detachment.”

Roadie Music

“An old-fashioned folk-rock work, celebrating love and nature as it should, and whose production (like its tasty artwork) faithfully reproduces every nuance.”

Patrick Dallongeville, Paris-Move

“Their debut album "Just Beyond the Shine", an intriguing and delightful variety of original songs recorded during the depths of the ongoing pandemic, explores the dark and light sides of love and the unwavering commitment to stay true to the heart in the face of all odds. Ranging in style through vintage country, Americana and folk rock, their music is sweetly captivating and reminds us that it is the fearless exploration of our own hearts that will lead us forward to a more sustainable and kinder world.”

Rootsville

“A classic duo of singer-songwriters sharing voices in the nine songs of a debut whose essence can be distilled into a single adjective: lovely. As beautiful is its vocal timbre, so are its melodies and its simple but careful instrumentation… just a nice feeling of warmth and familiarity, like that smell of coffee and toast in the morning that you know all too well but never get tired of.”

Eloy Pérez, Ruta 66

“Another beautiful Canadian reality that comes from the scenic landscapes of British Columbia is the duo called Peach & Quiet formed by Heather Read and Jonny Miller who make their debut by combining roots-rock, country music and folk with taste. “Just Beyond The Shine” is in fact the result of the couple's varied influences, matured over the years thanks to experiences linked to very different sounds. The album is produced by one of the cult figures of the Canadian scene, Steve Dawson, who led them by the hand through a series of fruitful sessions in the company of some of the most respected names in the roots scene. "Empty To Fill" has the strong sixties flavor and 'byrdsian' colors and opens the record brilliantly, "For My Love" is delightfully acoustic, a ballad shared with great love and with an extremely effective electric guitar 'break', "California Way" is sublimely interpreted by Heather Read and is in my opinion one of the high points with its attractive 'country flavor', "Shoreline After A Storm" is more 'dark' and can be a metaphor for painful and complicated interpersonal relationships while “Lucky In Love” keeps the most genuine country spirit alive by reconnecting to the sounds of the early seventies, inspired by the duets between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The melodies are always intriguing and the approach is intense, with a second part that sees "Will You", another beautiful duet, "There's A Very Good Chance", "Flowers Grow" and "Seven Daffodils" embellish a decidedly important and worthy selection to be known.”

Remo Ricaldone, Lonestar Time

“Peach & Quiet pay homage to love and longing in their gorgeous new single Empty To Fill — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist. Blending poetic lyrics of yearning and desire with a chiming track that seamlessly fuses folk, country, paisley pop and rock — and boasts some searing fretwork to boot — the romantic track is the first single from the B.C. duo’s upcoming debut album Just Beyond The Shine.

Darryl Sterdan, Tinnitist
